City of Cape Coral Selects SECS to Install 4.9Ghz Wireless Public Safety Network

Cape Coral – the “Growth Engine of SW Florida” – is a rapidly growing City on Florida’s south west Gulf coast. Incorporated in 1970, it currently has a population in excess of 150,000 which is growing by about 9,000 inhabitants annually. In addition to being one of the fastest growing areas in Florida it is also the 2nd largest City in the State geographically having an area of just over 114 square miles. The City features thousands of waterfront residential properties on canals, including many with direct, saltwater access to the Gulf. The City’s Public Safety infrastructure includes a centralized Public Safety building housing Police and Fire personnel, eight Fire Stations, and one Police sub station. Up to three additional Fire Stations will be built over the next 2 years to accommodate anticipated population growth. The Public Safety building and the adjacent Fire Station located at the City Centrum are on a City owned fiber backbone for data communications needs. The remaining seven Fire Stations are connected to the Public Safety data center via leased T1 lines. City and commercial fiber is not available at these sites. The Police marine sub-station at the City Yacht Club complex also does not have fiber connectivity. The Police Department has recently taken possession of a state of the art Mobile Incident Command Vehicle and we are seeking ways to improve the data communications link to this vehicle as it is deployed in the field.
The City has selected SECS to install Alvarion wireless systems using the new 4.9 GHz wireless channel authorized by the FCC for Public Safety use to provide high bandwidth service to the Mobile Incident Command Vehicle, the existing seven Fire Stations with T1 connectivity, future Fire Stations, and the Police sub-station. The additional bandwidth will be used to provide significantly better throughput to these locations and to obtain cost reductions by either eliminating the T1 lines or possibly downgrading them to B1 lines to provide emergency back-up. Additionally the City will utilize the increased bandwidth to the Fire Stations to provide either 802.11 or possibly 900 MHz wireless umbrellas around each Fire Station to allow Public Safety vehicles the opportunity to drive in and execute voluminous uploads and downloads. (Our PublicSafety vehicles utilize laptop computers equipped with CDMA cards for field data communication.

SECS completes Port Manatee wireless installation

The enormous quantities of lumber and building materials that arrive at Port Manatee create an equally enormous inventory tracking challenge. Southeastern Communication Service, Inc. (SECS) of Sarasota has just completed installation the wireless components of a tracking system that allows the port authority to maintain a continuous updated inventory of all the materials as they pass through the facility. The Port Manatee Forestry Terminal has become the largest importer of plywood and wood fencing in the Southeast with 600,000 tons of wood offloaded and transshipped annually. This figure is likely to continue increasing with new construction and rebuilding of hurricane damaged buildings fueling the growth. The Port Manatee Forestry Terminal encompasses 138 acres and includes more than 180,000 sq.ft. of under-the-roof warehouse storage space. The wireless inventory control system devices installed by SECS operate in conjunction with handheld asset tracking units. They are able to track materials at every point of terminal operations. The installation includes 15 integrated access points along with environmental enclosures and required more than 4,500 ft. of fiber optic and data cable.
“Its growing importance as a vital link in handling building material needed for our surging economy has made it necessary for Port Manatee to develop new and innovative inventory control systems. SECS is pleased to have played a key role in installing wireless communication systems needed for the Port’s continuing growth,” says SECS President Daniel Lester. Installation of Lake Wales Airport System

Sarasota firm to install Lake Wales Airport AWOS system

Southeastern Communication Service, Inc. President Daniel Lester announces that the firm has been awarded a contract to install the new Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) at the Lake Wales Airport in south central Florida. The airport is one of the most active destination and departure points in this rapidly growing part of Florida. Airport operations are dependent on a constant and reliable source of weather updates – particularly in an area where rapidly changing weather conditions are a fact of life. The new AWOS system being installed by SECS includes sensors which measure, collect and disseminate continuing weather data. The system is designed to assist meteorologists, pilots and flight dispatchers with information needed to plan flight routes, landing and take off schedules. While AWOS does not predict weather, the system’s sensors continually monitor and measure wind speeds and directions, temperature, dew points visibility, cloud formations and elevations, precipitation and barometric pressure. This vital information is then relayed to weather forecast stations for integration with other data including computer models, satellite photos and radar images. It is then made available for wireless, satellite and land line communications which can be accessed by airports and other off-site users. Says Lester, “We are proud to be part of creating the design and installation of a system that is essential to the safe and efficient operation of important airports such as the Lake Wales facility.” Southeastern Communication Service, Inc. is a general contractor specializing in design, engineering, construction and maintenance of wireless communication facilities. Headquartered in Sarasota, Fla. since 1990, the firm has become a leader in the communications construction industry.

The five towers range from 598 ft. to 1123 ft. in height and presented a considerable challenge to highly skilled SECS tower technician teams. The upgraded sites include WHEH, Greenwood; WRJA, Sumter; WNSE, Rock Hill, WRET, Spartanburg and WHMC, Conway. The State’s educational TV network is dedicated to the advancement of educational programs, culture and the arts as well as citizenship. NOAA's Intent to Renew Contract

NOAA notifies SECS of intent to renew contract

President Daniel G. Lester of Southeastern Communication Service, Inc. (SECS) has been notified by the National Oceanic and Administration of the agency’s intent to renew its service contract with the Sarasota based firm. The contract involves technical evaluation and support services for "life-cycle maintenance and catastrophic recovery" of radar towers essential to the national NOAA weather radio network. Since the weather radar towers are relied upon to carry on through storms, extreme temperatures and corrosive environments, they need to withstand a witch’s brew of potential problems — atmospheric corrosion, damaged structural components and tower substructure, and even fasteners loosened by alternating exposure to extreme heat and cold. Any of these can result in the system’s failure to carry out its lifesaving functions. It must therefore rely on the meticulous attention of a firm specializing in this vital maintenance operation. SECS is one of but a few national firms with the depth of experience and expertise needed. Says Lester, "We are proud to have earned NOAA’s confidence and to be a part of supporting the continued operation of this vital service." Among services performed for NOAA are detailed inspection, structural verfication and entire cleaning of frame structures towering some 75 meters (246 ft.) into the air. The towers, stairs and supporting structures are then coated with a specially formulated zinc/epoxy coating and must pass rigorous tests before being accepted as satisfactory. "While our primary focus has been the design, assembly and erection of radar and similar towers and systems used in a wide range of industrial applications, maintenance becomes every bit as important. That’s why we have kept highly trained crews available on a continual basis and almost on a moment’s notice to fulfill these obligations," adds Lester.
